For many of us, the first time we experienced jealousy was when a younger sibling was born, taking our parents’ attention away from us.

JEALOUSY: THE EMOTION THAT DESTROYS RELATIONSHIPS

Like envy, jealousy is a complicated emotion that mixes together many other feelings. When we’re jealous, we might feel scared, lonely, angry, sad, and embarrassed, all at the same time. But while envy tends to be a little like having a low-grade fever, jealousy is more like running a temperature that’s so high it can make us start to see things that aren’t there. Envy lurks at the back of minds, where we may not notice it; it colors our lives with its dark hues, but we may not even be aware of what’s going on. Jealousy, on the other hand, can take over our entire lives. We may find it hard to think about anything else. It can burst suddenly into rage and make us do some really silly things. It can even explode into violence.

Is America Less Envious Than Other Countries?

Some people think that as a nation Americans are less envious about other people’s money than people are from other countries. Experts think this is because many Americans believe that if they work hard, it’s possible for them to have what other people have in terms of wealth and possessions. So where someone in Europe might look at big house and hate the person who lives there, the American looks at the big house and dreams about how she can have a house just like it. In 2006, the World Values Survey found that Americans are only as third as likely as British or French people to feel envy about money; instead, Americans believe that “hard work generally brings success.” However, experts warn that this could change if Americans no longer feel as though they have as many opportunities as they once had. Apparently, the more we feel another, far more positive emotion—optimism, a feeling that good things are going to happen—the less likely we are to feel envy.
